SUPERYUPO PLUS is a quick-drying water, chemical and tear resistant synthetic sheet, with a silky smooth surface. It is the first YUPO material that can be printed on both sides with conventional paper inks; eliminating the need to change inks or reconfigure machines for synthetic media. An average of 10% less inks can be used to gain the same clarity as competitors’ grades. This also leads to faster ink drying times (33% average).
SUPERYUPO PLUS is suitable for UV offset, screen print and offset printing processes.
Polypropylene can be recycled through some curbside programs.
The CO2 emissions from this product can be mitigated through the Carbon Capture® programme, directly supporting the work of the Woodland Trust.
SUPERYUPO PLUS is suitable for maps, manuals, brochures, posters, calendars, banners and wristbands.
SUPERYUPO PLUS provides you with the opportunity to produce durable synthetic media on your offset press, without the need for special inks. SUPERYUPO PLUS runs with conventional litho ink and prints just like any other matt coated paper.
PRINTING TIPS:
Ink requirements
No special offset inks are required. SUPERYUPO PLUS has been tested using a number of conventional offset inks, such as; Toka, Toyo, DIC, Janecke & Schneemann and Impact HiTech; all with great results.
Recommended maximum densities for SUPERYUPO PLUS are: K:1.75 C:1.45 M:1.35 Y:1.00.
Spray powder
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be treated as a conventional offset paper and has been tested using 20μ KSL anti set-off spray powder.
Pile height
We recommend a maximum pile height of 10cm to aid drying.
Drying times
Less than 4 hours in environments suited to correct paper storage, and keeping pile heights to a minimum (as above).
We do recommend that the media is given 24 hours after printing, prior to finishing, so as to harden the ink fully and improve rub/scratch resistance.
Dampening solution
No special drying agents are required in the inks or fountain solution mix. A minimum of 4% IPA (alcohol) in the dampening water is recommended.
CREASING AND FOLDING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS, like paper, has a grain direction. Just like paper, if you are unsure of the direction make a small cut at the center of a sheet edge, pull on the cut and watch the direction of the tear. If the tear is parallel to the grain direction, it will be very straight, if it’s perpendicular to the grain, it will be rough and produce some tearing noise.
As SUPERYUPO PLUS has a grain direction, it is recommended to fold parallel to the grain direction. If though, for example,
you are producing a map with multiple folds parallel and perpendicular to the grain direction, set the highest number of folds parallel to the grain direction.
As SUPERYUPO PLUS is a Polypropylene, it does retain a memory of being flat – so, the more it is folded, the more that ‘memory’ effect takes place
Recommendations
We recommend a maximum of 8 page folding. If, however, 16 page folding is required, we would recommend testing with sample sheets, prior to purchase, to ensure you are happy with the end result – it may also be necessary to apply weight, after the folding process, to keep the folded sheets in shape.
For on-machine folding, products below 150mic require no pre-scoring. Use rubber-steel combination rollers, set the roller pressure as high as possible and ensure that the feeders are set at precise right angles to the rollers. It is also highly recommended to use non-abrasive rollers. For products 150mic, and above, we would recommend pre-scoring before folding.
Wherever possible, score and fold along the grain direction, but ensure that the final fold is parallel to the grain.
WIRO BINDING AND COMB BINDING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be wiro/comb bound, but we recommend punching round holes to avoid tearing of the material. It is possible to finish with square holes, but the tool should be sharp and nick free to avoid tearing and running.
DRILLING TIPS:
We recommend that the drill bit diameter should be larger than 6mm, sharp and nick free. With a smaller diameter, the drill bit can break due to thermal adhesion.
Release the air between the media before drilling.
Maximum recommended pile height, for drilling, is 20mm.
If thermal adhesion occurs, please cool down the drill bit or replace it.
BINDING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be bound in multiple ways, including; saddle stitching, adhesive binding, notch/burst binding, wire binding and ultrasonic sealing (on lower page counts).
Thread sewn is not recommended as, if the thread is pulled strongly, the area around the pinholes can tear.
Adhesive binding
We recommend roughening SUPERYUPO PLUS slightly deeper than you would, on paper, to increase the strength of the bond. As SUPERYUPO PLUS has a grain direction, and for the best results, please ensure the grain is aligned parallel to the top and bottom of the book.
An EVA hot melt is suitable adhesive but, to prevent thermal deformation of SUPERYUPO PLUS, please keep the adhesive at 180°C maximum.
Ultrasonic sealing
Ultrasonic sealing can be used when there is a lower page count, with a maximum of around 16 pages of 200mic.
Though sealing settings may vary slightly, depending on the total thickness of SUPERYUPO PLUS pages to be sealed, the below should give a good point of reference;
Frequency: 15kHz
Pressure: 2 to 4Kg/cm²
Compression time: 0.3 to 0.5 seconds
FOILING AND EMBOSSING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be foiled and embossed, but we recommend following the below information to get the best out of the product.
Foiling
When hot foil stamping SUPERYUPO PLUS, please be aware that some thermal distortion/contraction can occur. To keep this to a minimum, we recommend using a low-temperature foil and reducing the heat to the lowest possible setting, while still maintaining a result. As a guide, the plate temperature should be around 100°C – 105°C.
If the foiling is of small, repeating patterns, the patterns may misalign due to the thermal distortion.
Please obtain samples, if you are in and doubt, and ensure you are satisfied with the result prior to purchase.
Please consult your foil manufacturer/supplier to ensure you purchase a foil that is compatible with SUPERYUPO PLUS.
Embossing
Though SUPERYUPO PLUS can be embossed, we recommend not to do any deep or sharp embossing (such as credit cards, relief maps, etc), as breakages/punctures can occur.
If using a roll embossing press, then please see below for guidelines;
Roll temperature: 60°C – 90°C
Roll pressure: 100 – 200kg/cm
Please obtain samples, if you are in and doubt, and ensure you are satisfied with the result prior to purchase.
LAMINATING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be both cold and hot laminated. We would recommend cold lamination, as hot lamination could cause thermal distortion, but following the below guidelines should help to minimise this;
Hot lamination
As thermal distortion can occur with SUPERYUPO PLUS, we recommend keeping the temperature as low as possible, but still obtaining a result. The thinner the SUPERYUPO PLUS, the more this can be an issue. As a guide, a temperature of between 100°C – 120°C (depending on thickness), with as short a dwell time as possible, is a good starting point.
Please also keep the tension on the laminate roll to a minimum.
Please obtain samples, if you are in and doubt, and ensure you are satisfied with the result prior to purchase.
VARNISHING TIPS:
SUPERYUPO PLUS can be varnished in the same way as conventional offset paper. We would recommend a water-based dispersion varnish.
